Our Story & Vision

The Luger Foundation provides financial support and resources to the families that have incurred substantial medical debt due to premature birth, extended stays within the neonatal intensive care unit, or complications during pregnancy.

When I was born in 1973, I was born pre-term. Almost two and a half months premature. I then spent a total of 64 days in the NICU at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital. I was born to young parents. My father almost 20 years old, and my mother, 17 years old. After the care, I received during my stay at the hospital and was healthy enough to be sent home. My father returned to the hospital to set up a payment plan and begin paying what he could to satisfy the thousands of dollars of debt that had accrued over the time in the NICU and the care my mother received while having an emergency Cesarean Section. As my father sat in the medical billing office and began reviewing the account. Something astonishing had happened. The entire series of medical bills were paid in full, anonymously. The Luger Foundation is a Nonprofit Organization dedicated to helping those that have fallen on financial hardship due to these medical issues. When families are experiencing stressful situations such as these, the last thing they should need to worry about is the debt that may be incurring behind the scenes.

According to a CNBC study, the number one reason for the bankruptcy filing of the US is due to medical issues and related to medical debt. This research as found because of either high costs for care or time out of work, an estimated 530,000 families turn to bankruptcy each year because of medical issues and bills.

While driving down the continual bloating cost of medical care is a much deeper and complicated issue, let us work together and provide relief to those that may not have the resources to cover medical costs and out-of-pocket expenses for these families in need.
